He completed his MBBS at Motilal Nehru Medical College, University of Allahabad, in 1976.
He obtained his MD in Medicine from the same institution in 1980.
He completed his DM in Cardiology at GB Pant Hospital, University of Delhi, in 1983.
He undertook further training as a Commonwealth Scholar at Groby Road Hospital, Leicester, United Kingdom.
He worked as a Senior Research Associate at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, USA.
He previously served as Dean (Academics), Chief of the Cardio Thoracic Centre and Head of Cardiology at AIIMS, New Delhi.
He served as President of the Cardiological Society of India from 2008 to 2009.
